Funko Fun
For this project, I just wanted to have some fun with it. During lockdown, there wasn’t much going on, so I ended up raiding my sister’s toy collection. She had a bunch of Funko bobbleheads, and that sparked the idea to build a small series around a few of my favorites.
I mostly stuck with DC characters, but I also threw in Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory. He’s definitely the odd one out, but that was part of the fun. I even added Hubert into the mix. Not a Funko, just a LEGO display, but it worked visually so I kept it in.
The main idea was to create a bold, almost exaggerated pop of color while still keeping things controlled. I matched the background and lighting to each character’s identity. For example, pushing reds and yellows for The Flash so everything leaned into a monochromatic or near-monochromatic palette. It gave each image a strong color presence without feeling chaotic.
From a setup standpoint, it was simple but intentional. I built out small sets, cut custom bases for the figures so they sat clean, and shaped the background light to get smooth color separation. The lighting stayed soft enough to keep the plastic looking clean, but directional enough to give the figures some dimension.
I also shot everything at a slight 3/4 angle to mimic how toys are usually presented. Just enough to give them depth and personality without overcomplicating the composition.
Overall, it was one of those projects where the process was just as enjoyable as the final images. Simple idea, but a lot of room to experiment.
