The Nut League
I decided to revisit a project I shot some time ago called Nutrageous. The original idea was simple: photograph different types of nuts as clean product subjects—no visible shadows, placed on colorful gradient backgrounds. It was a controlled exercise in lighting and color, where the goal was to eliminate depth cues and let the shape, texture, and color transitions carry the image.
At the time, it was purely a technical challenge for dialing in even, diffused lighting to suppress shadows, managing reflections, and keeping the gradients smooth and consistent in-camera. But revisiting it now, I wanted to push the concept further and make it more narrative-driven.
With the addition of AI tools, the project shifted from documentation to transformation. I took the original idea and expanded it into something more playful—turning what I started calling the “league of extraordinary nuts” into a full superhero team, which eventually became The Nut League. The focus moved from just clean visuals to character design, color identity, and stylization, while still maintaining the original palette logic from the shoot.
I also pulled inspiration from old Marvel Comics trading cards I grew up with. That influence shaped the presentation, especially the idea of designing the reverse side of the cards, complete with abilities, attributes, and visual stats. It added a layer of structure and nostalgia that grounded the more experimental AI elements.
From a workflow standpoint, this became a hybrid process. The original photography established the foundation for lighting, composition, and color control while AI was used to extend, reinterpret, and build on top of those assets. It wasn’t about replacing the image, but evolving it.
Overall, it turned into a fun project, but more importantly, a useful study in how AI can be integrated into a controlled visual pipeline enhancing concept and storytelling without losing the intent of the original capture.
